INTRODUCTION: Smooth Pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus (syn: quitensis)) is a dicot weed in the Amaranthaceae family. In Uruguay this weed first evolved resistance to Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides in 2022 and infests Corn (maize), and Soybean. Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase (Inhibition of EPSP synthase). Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to glyphosate and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides. SUMMARY:
Fusarium head blight is a devastating disease of wheat and barley worldwide and has been epidemic in the South America´s Southern cone for the past decade. Currently, available control measures are only partially effective and biological control could be an additional tool in an integrative approach to manage Fusarium head blight. In Uruguay, since 2003, studies have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of biocontrol agent applied to wheat spikes or to wheat residues to reduce infection or inoculum production of Gibberella zeae, respectively.Preliminary results indicate that there is a potential to biologically reduce the perithecial production of G. zeae with the application of Trichoderma harzianum to wheat residue. At this time, however, it is evident thatconsiderably more research is needed to integrate biological control into Fusarium head blight management.
MenosSUMMARY:
